AISI 316 vs 304: when the difference is worth it — Part II
316 is harder to work. Softer when forming, tougher when welding, more temperamental when polishing. Almost nobody chooses it for pleasure. We do.

There is a very concrete reason why 316 is less common than its reputation deserves: working it is hard work.
Under the press it is more docile, almost yielding: it bends willingly, but if you do not know it, it gives back imprecise shapes, hidden stresses, a design that does not add up. In welding it is the opposite: tough, reluctant, demanding heat and a steady hand, and it forgives few mistakes. And at polishing it shows its hardest side: it brings out the reflection only if you respect it, pass after pass. Forcing it means ruining it.
In industrial terms: more time, more scrap, more skill required. A steel that at the end of the day costs more not only in raw material, but in hours of work and in mistakes you cannot afford.
The easy route is 304: faster, more predictable, cheaper. And for a great many objects it is perfectly fine. But we do not build objects that live indoors. We build showers and columns that stay outside, exposed, for twenty-five years and more. There the shortcut has a price, and the customer pays it.
Choosing 316 also means accepting its temperament. It means workshop hands that know how to bend it, weld it, bring it to a mirror without betraying it. It is craftsmanship even before engineering: the difference comes from people who know the material well enough to work with it rather than tame it.
The result does not show straight away. It shows later. In a reflection that stays sharp, in a surface that does not forgive salt yet carries no marks of it. In a product that, quite simply, holds still. As we promised it.
