AISI 316 vs 304: when the difference is worth it — Part I

Between AISI 304 and AISI 316 stainless steel there are a few percentage points of molybdenum. It seems like nothing. Instead it is the difference between a product that lasts a season and one that lasts a lifetime.

Two, perhaps three percentage points. On paper, that is the whole gap between the two most widespread stainless steels in the world. An amount so small that, reading it on a data sheet, you would be tempted to shrug.

That little molybdenum, however, changes how the metal behaves exactly where it counts: at the boundary between steel and salt.

304 is an excellent steel. In a kitchen, in an enclosed bathroom, far from the sea, it can work for decades without failing. But take it outdoors, a few steps from the shoreline, under the salt mist that comes in on the libeccio wind, and the story changes. Chlorine and salt look for a weak point in the surface. They find it. It starts with a stain. Then a speck of rust, where there should be none. It is pitting corrosion: small, localised, relentless.

This is exactly what molybdenum is for. It makes the steel’s passive layer (that invisible film that protects it) more stable, better able to reseal when attacked. That is why, in the trade, 316 is called “marine steel”. Not because it comes from the sea, but because it is the only one that can live beside it without surrendering.

For Fontealta it was never a choice between two options. It was born outdoors, in Versilia, among the salt and the hard light of the coast. The first shower we built was meant to bring fresh water to the seashore: it was born right inside the most hostile environment there is for metal. Using 304 would have been like building a boat with the wrong wood.

That is why every column, every tap, every accessory that leaves Viareggio is in AISI 316. Not as a premium option, not as a price-list upgrade. As a starting point. Because the right steel is not the one that costs least for the same look: it is the one still there in ten years, standing firm, while the water keeps running over it.
